DIY Family Giving Spree

DIY Family Giving Spree

Total Time To Complete:
30 Minutes

Suitable for ages 3 - 12

My husband and I have always been big on keeping our house clean and organized by regularly getting rid of excess stuff. One of the best ways to do that is to just simply go through each drawer or closet, one at a time, and take out anything we no longer use. This simple process of regular purging has helped us bring peace to our home and serve as a reminder that things are just things and we don't need to have--or keep--it all.

Getting the excess out not only keeps our house clean, but it also gives us a wonderful opportunity to share with those who could really use some of our extras. This year we're starting a new family tradition of cleaning (read: purging) our house before the holidays to make room for new gifts by having a Family Giving Spree. This is a great way to involve your children in cleaning and preparing for the holidays and get them excited about sharing and giving to others.

Want to have your own Family Giving Spree? See the how-to below!

G7 Family Giving Spree 1

To have your own Family Giving Spree, you'll need:

  • 1 brown paper grocery bag*
  • 1 "family giving spree" gift tag
  • 1 Wonka® Spree® Mini Candy Canes
  • Scissors
  • A hole punch
  • Baker's twine, ribbon, or string
  • Used toys and other items in good condition

*If your children have several toys to give away, you may want to give each child his or her own paper grocery bag to fill.

Step 1: Gather your children and tell them you're going to go on a Family Giving Spree. Give each child a paper grocery bag and ask them to fill it with toys they no longer play with that are still in good condition. You may also want to include clothes, shoes, school supplies, and other items that are in good condition that your children no longer use. Tell them that you'll be going together as a family give these toys and other items to a local charity or family in need so that others can receive nice things for Christmas too.

Step 2: Cut out a gift tag and punch a hole, centered along the left side of the tag.

Step 3: Use your baker's twine, ribbon, or string to tie the gift tag onto Wonka® Spree® Mini Candy Cane.

Step 4: Fold over the top of the grocery bag and hook the candy cane onto the front. Or, if your bag is full, slip the candy cane inside with the toys and other items.

Step 5: Go together as a family to deliver the bag(s) to a local charity or family in need. If you want to keep your giving a secret, place your bag(s) on the family's doorstep, ring the doorbell, and run back to the car so they don't see you. Kids will love racing back to the car!

When you get home, remember to talk about how good it feels to give and share with others. Giving and sharing out of love for others is what Christmas is all about. Teaching that to our children and sharing these fun family experiences together can help us come closer as a family and keep the joy of giving with us all season long.
